Fix Android File Transfer Connection Issues

My phone wouldn’t connect to Android File Transfer all of a sudden after one of the Android software updates. It would just come up saying to unlock the phone and that it couldn’t connect. This is just a quick post on how to fix that.

I am assuming in this post that you have already enabled developer mode and have USB debugging running. All you need to do to get it up and running again is the following and it only takes a minute or so.

  1. Slide down the notification bar and open the settings menu
Go to the settings menu

2. Go to the developer options menu

Go to developer options

3. Click on ‘Select USB Configuration’

Click on 'Select USB Configuration'

4. Click on MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)

4. Click on MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)

In the last step my phone was already setup on that MTP option, but simply re-selecting it just seemed to make it work the next time I connected the usb cable.

If this does not work then your issues may be hardware related. If this is the case you will need to swap out the cable and even try a different phone with the same cable to work out which parts are working and which are not.
